What to Wear Wednesday | Choosing Your Wardrobe

Let’s get real – this is probably one of the hardest parts of getting ready for a photo session. A Client always needs help and even if you are not a client yet…please ask for help in this area as clothes can at times make or break a cherished family moment.. I’m a fashion maven in training after years of being asked “What Do I Wear?”  So I have decided to devote a weekly post to share my knowledge. Of course it will be ever changing and won’t always be what to wear but I can guarantee that it will help you in photo shoots.

Below are {4} steps that will  process that I will walk you through using a sample bored I have created.

What to Wear Wednesday 11. COLOR

On my sample board I seriously Googled “spring colors” and chose this eye shadow palette by Dior. Now I know what colors to mix together. That’s right I said mix!  A color palette can be anything from eye color to an article of clothing to a painting…it is all about your own personal tastes.  What makes you smile? Save this color palette to your computer or print it. You will be using it!

This will help in deciding if you need formal, casual, bright, layered, etc. This is super important if you want those Pinterest worthy family photo images! Also ask your photographer any suggestions they  may have as well.

3. SHOP

Don’t wait until the day before your session. You will be in your own personal hell. Start a month or two before your session. Especially if your order online like I do. That will give you time to get the item and return for another size if necessary. Don’t know where to shop? Where do you find you get clothes that make you the most comfortable? For me it would be Athleta but we can’t get our family photos done in our stretchy pants so then I would say Nordstroms OR Piperlime for myself and Monsoon for my kids – great selection and easy returns. Now start choosing items that have the colors from the palette. They don’t have to match. They just have to compliment. Once you have chosen your outfit then base your kids and husband around them. They are the easiest to dress. You – the woman – are the hardest. I just know this from personal experience..

Once you have chosen your outfits, lay them on a flat surface, take a picture and send it to your photographer. Now he or she can choose props to compliment your session wardrobe.

Friendly reminder – I am always available to help clients and future clients with their Wardrobe 101 questions.  Feel free to share your images on Instagram with #becauselifeisart and #whattowearwednesday.

Now get to starting your own style board – don’t forget to share it too! We are all in this game of life together – might as well help each other out a bit.
