If you're looking for a photo location in Franklin, Tennessee that feels natural, timeless, and unmistakably Middle Tennessee, Harlinsdale Farm is one of my favorites.
Located just minutes from downtown Franklin, this historic property offers open fields, mature trees, rustic fencing, beautiful architecture, and plenty of room to create a gallery with variety—all without traveling between multiple locations.
As a Franklin, TN portrait photographer, I especially love Harlinsdale Farm for families, seniors, maternity sessions, couples, and anyone who wants photographs that feel relaxed and elevated rather than overly posed.
Why I Love Photographing at Harlinsdale Farm
One of the best things about Harlinsdale is how many different looks we can create during a single portrait session.
The wide-open fields give us those soft, natural Tennessee landscapes, while the fences, barns, pathways, and mature trees add texture and character. Depending on the season, the farm can feel bright and airy, rich and green, warm and golden, or beautifully muted and earthy.
That variety makes it especially good for clients who want a full gallery without every photograph looking like it was taken in exactly the same spot.
And then there is golden hour.
The warm evening light coming across the open property can be absolutely gorgeous. If you love photographs with movement, backlighting, soft grasses, and that slightly dreamy feeling, Harlinsdale is an excellent choice.
Family Photos at Harlinsdale Farm
For families, the amount of space at Harlinsdale makes it particularly helpful when photographing younger children.
Instead of expecting everyone to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera, we can walk, play, snuggle, explore, and let kids move.
Those in-between moments are often where some of my favorite photographs happen.
Harlinsdale is also a beautiful option for extended family sessions because there is enough space to comfortably photograph larger groups while still creating smaller combinations of parents, children, siblings, and grandparents.
What Should You Wear for Photos at Harlinsdale Farm?
The natural colors of the farm work beautifully with an earthy, slightly elevated wardrobe.
Think creams, camel, rust, olive, chocolate brown, muted blues, denim, warm neutrals, soft florals, and textured fabrics. In the fall, deeper jewel tones can also look gorgeous against the landscape.
Rather than putting everyone in matching outfits, I recommend choosing a cohesive color palette and mixing complementary colors and textures.
Long dresses photograph especially well here because the open landscape allows fabric and movement to become part of the image.
And don't worry—you don't have to figure it all out yourself. I provide styling guidance so we can choose clothing that works with both your personal style and the location.
SENIOR PHOTOS & sweet 16 AT HARLINSDALE FARM
Harlinsdale Farm is one of my favorite locations for senior pictures in Franklin, TN, particularly for seniors who want something natural without feeling overly country.
We can create polished portraits near the architecture and fences, then transition into more relaxed images walking through the property or using the open landscape.
It also works beautifully with multiple outfits.
A dress or more elevated outfit can feel romantic and editorial against the fields, while denim, boots, casual layers, or a favorite everyday outfit gives the session a completely different personality.
My goal with senior photography is never to make every senior look the same. The location gives us the backdrop, but the session should still feel like you.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR PHOTOS AT HARLINSDALE FARM?
I generally recommend scheduling outdoor sessions close to sunrise or sunset rather than in the middle of the day.
Evening sessions are particularly beautiful because we can take advantage of the softer light and, when conditions cooperate, that gorgeous golden glow across the fields.
The look of Harlinsdale also changes throughout the year.
Spring brings fresh greens and softer tones. Summer gives us lush landscapes. Fall creates warmer grasses and richer colors. Even the more neutral landscape of late fall can be stunning with the right wardrobe and light.
There really isn't one single "best" season—it depends on how you want your photographs to feel.
